Perhaps not surprisingly, Sierra Coffee and Cafes began in Ponsonby in 1992. Taking pride of place front and centre in the café window, was a state-of-the-art 7-kilo Diedrich coffee roaster that roasted fresh coffee every day. Roasting fresh coffee was pioneering, a curiousity and a clever draw card.

On what would turn out to be a life-changing day over a game-changing cup of superb coffee, two down-to-earth though discerning gentlemen walked into this Sierra Ponsonby café wanting to buy a coffee. They ended up buying the business. Taken by the freshly roasted coffee and the café experience, they returned and made an offer the owner couldn’t refuse. They bought the coffee and café business to help deliver great coffee all across Auckland.

Fast forward nearly 25 years and Sierra is your local community café still serving up freshly roasted coffee and freshly made food across 33 locations. Sierra remains one of New Zealand’s most experienced coffee and café operators. We are also proudly and purposefully independent. And the coffee is still roasted fresh daily, first thing every morning, to this very day.
